Creating a Medieval Level

This week was a challenge to design an indoor level using Medieval Dungeon content from Infuse Studio.

First, I came up with notes to answer some questions about my level and character:

  • Why is the player there?
    • The player is currently at an inn within the castle’s kingdom and has worked her way into the storage beneath the inn. However, a rebellion has been gathering weapons within the bottom of a crypt, and the main character has to go select a poisoned dagger to assassinate the king.
    • The innkeeper holds a neutral position towards the king, but his inn was believed to hold a small arsenal for the militia of the kingdom. However, the crypt underneath was actually used as a torture chamber in which the previous king would stealthily use to pull suspects off the street. The king’s aim was to gather information about surrounding areas, their plans, and the easiest methods of terrestrial capture.
  • What is the player's goal?
    • Find the path to the crypt’s stash. Select the weapon and move onto moving into the castle to assassinate the king.
  • Where is the start and the end of the level?
    • The start begins at the entrance to the dungeon, at the top of a staircase that led from the inn. The player must find which doorway leads to the correct chamber.
  • What obstacles will the player have to overcome?
    • Different rooms/hallways, crumbled floors.

I built the level from the bottom up, starting with the torture chamber. This made it easier for me to visually form a level from the base of a room into a hallway. Focusing on the general path of the floor, I began using the crypt architecture to lay out a floor plan for the rooms and hallways. Afterwards, I laid out a hallway and that connects with another doorway; there, a mausoleum is ready to explore.

Overall, I definitely planned a too ambitious level considering my computer's capabilities, as I struggled with a lot of lag that greatly slowed down the process.

I will be adding...

  • More decor
  • Ceilings
  • Pits
  • Platforms
  • Staircase
